This role gives students the opportunity to directly engage with homeless individuals. Outreach volunteers offer small snacks and interact with those facing homelessness, often offering advice and support. Participants are given necessary knowledge and training in a compulsory briefing session.
What skills do I need?
Other than good communication, no specific skills are required for this role! As long as you are friendly and polite, the rest can be picked up from the training.
What will I gain?
This will enable you to become part of a network of organisations working to help relieve the issue of homelessness in Sheffield. As well as gaining a deeper understanding of the every day problems homeless individuals face, the outreach programme strengthens communication and team work skills. There are also opportunities to get involved in further activities such as event planning and fundraising.
Training and support
All volunteers must attend a training briefing. This will equip volunteers with necessary knowledge i.e sign posting and health and safety. Also, a lead volunteer will always be present on walk arounds. Lead volunteers have undergone additional training.
Walks are 40 minutes long and students are expected to sign up for a shift every fortnight. There is no limit placed on the number of walk arounds you do, however we recommend no more than three volunteers sign up to a single shift.
DBS (criminal records) check
