Supermarket Collection Volunteer

This opportunity takes place between 30 Jun 2022 and 02 Jul 2022

Foodbanks are essential for some people facing economic and social difficulties, especially at the moment with increased prices. The supermarket collections are vital to stock up on items (food and toiletries) to give out to people in need. As a volunteer you'll be handing out shopping lists of items that the food bank needs to shoppers as they enter the store, and receiving the donations at the collection points as they leave. There will always be a food bank person onhand overseeing the collection so you will not be doing this on your own.

The dates for this collection are Thursday 30th June, Friday 1st & Saturday 2nd July, 9am - 5pm Each day is divided up into 2 hour slots, but you are welcome to do more than one (but no pressure to!)

There is a Doodle Poll so that you can see which slots are still free and sign up that way - just add your name and phone number to the list (they will be hidden from other participants) and select the day(s) and time(s) you'd like to do .We can have up to 4 people at each time slot at the Tesco Extra store on Savile Street/Spital Hill

Sign up for food collection at Savile Street here; Tesco Savile Street Collection.

The collection will also be taking place at Tesco Metro on Ecclesall Road on the same days. Only 2 people at a time can collect at this store due to limited space in the store and as 2 of our volunteers will be doing much of that collection, you will just be covering for them so that they can take a break. They will show you what to do.

People are also needed to help bring the food back to the foodbank at 5pm each day. We will need ideally about 4-6 people to do this. (Please note that it involves heavy lifting).

What skills do I need?

None! Just a friendly smile and willing to speak to members of the public

What will I gain?

Help a local foodbank to boost supplies

Training and support

Briefing will be given beforehand and on the day. The foodbank manager or an experienced volunteer will be there to direct the collection and deal with any questions.
