Volunteering Matters is a National Charity with projects across the UK. We recruit volunteers into a number of roles. Sporting Chance Sheffield mainly engages with men aged 50+.

Pen Pals Volunteer 2021

This opportunity takes place between 19 Apr 2021 and 30 Jul 2021. Applications closed on 10 May.

Write a letter once a month to one or more recipients (depending on your commitments). Where possible we try to match people with similar interests. In this inter-generational project, you will be making someone feel like they "belong" again.

The Pen Pals scheme was initially set up in response to the covid pandemic as a means of engaging with older people who were cut off and unable or unsure how to access activities online. Lots of people love to receive a personalised letter (rather than bills and flyers through their door). Our scheme now includes men and women of all ages and we would love to encourage some inter-generational exchange and sharing of experiences.

As a volunteer you would need to undergo a short training /induction session (approx 15 mins) by zoom or over the telephone.

As a recipient you would just need to register with your name /address etc.

Cost of envelopes and stamps etc will be reimbursed

Sporting Chance Sheffield started in 2017 it now also covers Rotherham and will be soon expanding into Barnsley. Normally we offer face to face engagement and group activities for men aged 50 and over. We offer group fitness sessions, chair exercise, badminton, table tennis, short walks, but not all our sessions are activitiy based as not all our participants are physically active. Many of our sessions are about engagement and social interaction most of our attendees come for the interaction /friendhip and banter. We have quizes, indoor curling, boccia, cards, dominoes, day trips.

We have recently started online and postal activities. We do a weekly online quiz and fitness classes. Not all older people are I.T. literate so we started a postal pen pals scheme which includes people of all ages who may be suffering with social isolation/ lack of interaction.

What skills do I need?
