Literacy Champions (Primary Schools) Volunteer 2021/22

This opportunity takes place between 08 Nov 2021 and 17 Dec 2021

Would you like to volunteer in a Sheffield School? We are looking for Literacy Champions to volunteer in local primary schools, helping children with their reading and writing. Be part of a team of volunteers providing vital help to boost children's learning and providing classroom assistance in a school. You don't need to be studying English or have any special skills. You just need to be a confident English speaker and be enthusiastic! You will be asked to volunteer one morning or afternoon a week for 6 weeks (Weeks 7-12). Gain first hand experience in a primary classroom and of working with children. Places will be filled on a first come, first served basis so don’t delay!

What skills do I need?

Confident English speaker. Experience of working with children or teaching is not required. Project training will cover basic aspects of supporting primary literacy (e.g. introduction to phonics).

What will I gain?

A fantastic opportunity to gain experience of teaching and working with children in a school. Share your enthusiasm for reading and inspire children to love books!

Training and support

Full training provided by Sheffield Volunteering. There will be two compulsory training sessions - one on Child Safeguarding (online) and one on Schools Volunteering (various dates tbc).

Time commitment

One morning/ afternoon a week for 6 weeks from Weeks 7-12 (w/c 8 Nov - w/c 13 Dec 2021). Minimum two hour session each week. Often schools prefer volunteers to go in a morning as this tends to be when they do more literacy work.
