SMS prioritizes young people who struggle at relationships, at risk of offending in the community /exclusion from school. We seek to enable young people to overcome barriers, discover their strengths and achieve goals. In this role you will be paired with a young person and be their mentor, encouraging them to live positively and to the full.
At the moment the mentoring is done either by phone calls, texts, WhatsApp or Facetime and possibly Zoom. Once things are back to some normality volunteer mentors and young people may meet up.
What skills do I need?
Outgoing, Approachable, Good listener, Able to identify needs.
What will I gain?
Accredited training, Experience in youth work and the voluntary sector.
Training and support
Training will be done via Zoom (provided by Waypoint accredited training). Volunteers will receive supervision every six weeks.
The support will be reviewed after 6 sessions. We ask that our volunteers meet the young person at least once every 2 weeks for a minimum of 2 hours. Meetings are currently done virtually.
